There is a long story but he became an endocrinologist and only treats diabetic patients.     The amount of time it takes and the number of carbs you need to switch your source of fuel to fat can differ from one person to the next. The only way to know for sure if your body is going into ketosis is to test your ketone levels regularly using keto test strips. And you will need to be extremely strict with your diet, as any “cheats” or fluctuations will pull you out of ketosis.

    Eating only 20 grams of carbs a day is hard. The keto diet is a high-fat and low-carb (HFLC) diet. I would actually describe it as extremely low-carb—you’re allowed to eat just 20 grams in a day. Some people on keto follow a net-carb plan (you can subtract the grams of fiber from a food’s total carbs) and you’re allowed to eat more carbs in a day. For my 30-day diet and for the sake of simplicity, I stuck with total carbs.

  12. This person would do best to follow the tailor made professional advice that she gets for her daughter, as I’m sure she is. People who are healthy have no need for “special diets” that may be suitable for those who have special needs and so a tailor made plan. Yes ketosis should not be confused with keto acidosis, however there are also the matters of the long term effects of HFLC diet on cardiovascular and gastro intestinal health. Not to mention the question of the ability for MOST people to maintain such a strict regime and no doubt the emotional and psychological considerations of choosing to go on these extreme diets. Weight (and losing it) is only one parameter of what it means to be healthy. It is more important to move the body to an equilibrium weight (depending upon your genetics) and this is obtained with a balanced diet and exercise regime, and not overly focusing on the short term issues of body image. jl
