Eating Fast Food While Dieting Intermittent fasting: You eat all of your daily calories within a shortened period — typically 6 to 8 hours — and fast for the remaining 14 to 16 hours. Fasting gets you into ketosis and keeps you there — it drains your body of its glucose reserves, so you switch over to burning fat for energy, aka ketosis.
The ketogenic diet takes a similar (but slightly different) approach. Rather than restricting calories or eating windows, the breakdown of nutrients is manipulated so that fat supplies the majority of daily calories (70 to 80%), and very minimal carbohydrates (often less than 20 grams) are consumed. The goal of this eating approach is to put the body into a state of ketosis—a situation where inadequate carbohydrate intake forces the body to break down fat stores whose fatty acids can then be broken down into ketone bodies and used as temporary fuel.
Keto Learning When you eat more food than your body needs for energy production, the pancreas releases insulin. Insulin then signals your body’s fat cells to store the extra calories as fat for later use. The opposite happens when you don’t eat – your insulin levels drop and this signals fat cells to release the stored fat. In other words, fasting allows your body to use up stored fat for energy (that’s why we got those fat stores in the first place).
