  4. For those considering going keto, read above: its a MODERATE protein intake. I’ve had so many f**kin bodybuilders tell me “Yeah I’m keto right now, eating about 300grams fat, and uh, 300 grams of protein”.
    Day 10: I’m starting to get sick of the same foods that I know are safe bets. And the number of times I’ve Googled: “Is _____ keto?” is getting out of hand. I’ve realized that the only real gripe I have with the keto diet is that there are so many healthy, nutritious foods that you can’t eat while on it. (Maybe that’s why experts say you should give up restrictive diets once and for all.) Carrots? Sweet potatoes? Brussels sprouts? What vitamins and nutrients am I missing out on by leaving these foods off my plate?

    Do you realise how sickening it feels to read this article when you’re a mother of a 6 year old beautiful girl who has had Type1 Diabetes since she was 2 years old. All I do 24 hours a day, which includes the 8 hours she’s sleeping is test her blood sugar to make sure she doesn’t fall too low, become Hypoglycemic, shaking, dizzy, confused, damage her brain or fall into a hypoglycemic coma or her sugars aren’t too high, which results in Hyperglycaemia, which can damage her heart, kidneys, eye sight, circulation or put her into a Ketoacidosis state – nauseous, vomiting, abdominal pain or a coma. I test her blood for Ketones whenever her blood sugar is too high or she is becoming sick to ensure she has NO keytones in her blood to keep her as healthy & safe as I can & do my best everyday to keep her out of hospital & hoping for the best future she can have. Then to read that you do all of this to YOUR body on purpose so you can loose a couple of kilos? It just makes my eyes well up with tears in the disbelief of what I’m reading. Not only are you doing this on purpose you are recommending it, it seems, to other young people that would like to destroy their bodies.

    Ketogenic diets must have a Holiday-Inn-Express-like effect that convinces dilettantes that they have special insights into evolution. Here is Gary Taubes telling us that ketosis is the normal human metabolism because there were no carbs in human history or something – I defy you to apprehend a cogent thought from those two sentences. If he’s saying hominids didn’t depend on carbs until the Neolithic and someone out there is believing that then there isn’t much I can say.

    Don’t give a shite about cholesterol levels , unless you have familial hypercholesterolia like for real get n official diagnosis of it. I had a physio prof in med school laugh about the aggresive use of statins and that his opinion is that unless your total cholesterol is 300+ don’t worry about it. Check out a couple of Peter Attia’s lectures on it as well when u can.

  13. I have just embarked on a low carbohydrate high-fat moderate protein diet. It’s only been 12 days. But what I’ve noticed is I haven’t lost any weight. And more disturbingly (sorry TMI alert) my M cycle is late. My carbs are very low 10 g per day. And there are no sneaky ones sliding in there that I don’t know about! have been very very anal about that!

    Hi Karen. I am also a type 1. Keto works great for me. My blood sugars have never been better. You will need to pay attention to your insulin needs. When you go low carb you do need to start taking some insulin for protein. There are Facebook groups that can help. Diabetics transitioning to LCHF is one.
    Once you know your body fat percentage, you can also determine your lean body mass. For example, if someone weighs 150 pounds and is 25% body fat, we can figure out their body fat in pounds:
    Yep, if you are not in a caloric deficit BUT you are eating low carb I still do indeed recommend a carb refeed (not a cheat day, as that sets up the wrong mentality in my opinion), especially since fat is not going to readily be converted into glycogen and if you try to achieve it through protein, you will wind up building too much ammonia.

I’m following the anti-CA form of a ketogenic diet due to a CA diagnosis – above 80% fat, a much smaller amount of protein (2 – 3 oz of protein per meal, which for me is typically 2 meals a day) and very low carb (9-11 grams per day). I recently checked food sources of glutamine and found that mushrooms are high in glutamine. Bastyr, a naturopathic university in my area, recommends Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor) mushrooms as part of its oncology protocol. I know that Turkey Tail mushrooms enhance the immune system, but since mushrooms are high in glutamine and also would seem to be a source of saccarides, should they be limited or avoided? Thanks!

    I’ve not heard of that happening on keto, more often I’ve heard people getting constipated, but that just requires adding magnesium to your diet which I take nightly.
