I won’t comment on the diet itself but dietitians do not simply rely on guidelines handed to them, nor on anecdotal cases. This article refers to specific studies all throughout, some that support the diet and others that don’t. The goal of a dietitian is to help clients reach their optimal health while still enjoying a high quality of life. I’m sure Abbey is genuinely happy for those it has helped. That does not mean this diet is best for everyone regardless of their unique circumstances, goals and medical history. Sadly there is not enough high quality research that Keto promotes sustained weight loss in the general population. Maybe there will be in the near future, but right now it would be unethical to recommend such a restrictive diet to the broad audience of a blog. I would also make sure to tell people to watch very carefully for hidden vegetable oils in seemingly keto friendly products like salad dressings or marinated olives, artichoke hearts etc. Mark Sisson’s new-ish brand Primal Kitchens makes dressings with only Avocado oil which is not full of disastrous-for-your-body pressed seed oils like canola, safflower, soybean and corn oils. Olive oil is also obviously fine (and great for you) but people who are starting Keto don’t know how dangerous the vegetable oils are and some foods on keto can be found soaked in them.
To make sure the diet is nutritionally balanced, an experienced dietitian works out exactly how much of which foods the child can eat each day. To help with this, parents have individual recipes for their child, are given support on how to plan meals and are guided on which foods should be avoided. As the diet can be quite restrictive, the dietitian will recommend any vitamin and mineral supplements that are needed.

Interesting to read the research but I have to give an anecdotal story. My spouse, who has type 2 DM has been on this for 6 months. The fat content is not 90%…it is 70% and consists of healthy fats…olive and avocado oil, coconut oil, MCT (if you want) and use real butter. I put a TBL of whipping cream in my coffee. I’ve lost 20# but have not been totally strict. We tend to eat bacon several times a week but do not eat lots of really fatty meats….mostly chicken but enjoy all the chicken meat vs eating only tasteless,dry breast meat. We have been following the DietDoctor.com. This has been the only weight loss program we have done that has caused decreased appetite, therefore eating less. We eat lots of veggies (anything that grows above ground) with occasional fruit (usually berries or an apple). I don’t feel restricted and have accepted the fact that I am most likely insulin-resistant and need to really restrict certain carbs.
