Dr. Berg talks about intermittent fasting and muscle loss. It is a myth that you will lose muscle mass if you do intermittent fasting simply because intermittent fasting spikes growth hormone (GH) and GH protects your proteins. GH is called a protein sparer.

  • so when i lost muscle on intermittent fasting,it was because of low level GH? a gland issue? i do have low LH and FSH which inturn gives me moderat to low testosterone production.

  • i mainly do 16/8 fasting but just 2-3 days then refeed on healthy carbs. def slimed down. im still pumping the gym hard so very vascular but i did feel i was losing some muscle.. maybe i was just a bit flat. think i wil try a full week now 16/8

  • Not sure if you'll see this comment since this video is a little older now, but do you know if taking supplements will spike insulin the same way a meal would? I ask because its been shown that supplementing l-glutamine can drastically increase your growth hormone. So would it be okay to take this during the time you are fasting (without worrying about spiking insulin), especially if you are both fasting and lifting weights? Or should you leave the supplement for the feeding window?

  • I'm 34. When I was 18 I started doing body building. For over 10 years food has become my prison!
    Even in some years or months when I wouldn't train I still felt trapped by meals and protein. Not eating equalled being less in my mind. Intermittent Fasting changed everything.
    I am vegan now (which was another life changer and bubble burster), I still train, and I do Intermittent Fasting. Or as I call it- FREEDOM.

  • My results:
    1) I went from 222.2lbs to 200lbs. I weighed in 15MAY2017 and again 01JUN2017.
    2) I no longer feel pain in my shoulder from arthritis. I've actually increased my range of motion.
    3) I went from doing 3 pull-ups one week to 12 a week later.
    4) My energy is incredible. I walk nearly 10 miles around Baltimore every other morning without breaking a sweat.

  • The hormone that counters the cortisol is the insulin which is the major anabolic hormone in the body and it is triggered by sugar and snacks that have carbohydrate, on the other hand, growth hormone is considered stress hormone which is released during hypoglycemia but the insulin is more anabolic than growth hormone. Sugar (carbohydrate) intake suppress cortisol. This is according to "lecture notes for USMLE by Kaplan" Thanks

  • Dr. Berg, I appreciate all of your videos. I'd love to hear your analysis of longer water fasts, like 7, 14, 21 days. I've lost good weight on one meal a day combined with the foods you recommend, good sleep, strength training and Interval Training. But I may have reached a plateau. I'm thankful for losing 29 lbs since I started, but I need to lose another 25 pounds to reach my normal body weight. So I'm thinking of trying longer fasts to restart the weight loss.

    If you are on a high carb diet Hypoglycemia fucks you up.

    If you are on a high fat diet Hypoglycemia is kind of normal, maybe with Hypoglycemia he means low insulin levels I don't know, or does it mean high ketone levels?
