Associate professor of medicine, the director of the Duke Lifestyle Medicine Clinic, and medical director of the Duke Center for Smoking Cessation. Dr. Westman is also board certified in internal medicine and obesity medicine, and has a masters degree in clinical research. His clinical research and clinical care relate to lifestyle treatments for obesity, diabetes, and tobacco dependence, and has over 90 peer-reviewed publications. He is currently the president of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, and a fellow of the Obesity Society and the Society of General Internal Medicine. Finally, he is co-editor of the medical textbook, Obesity: Evaluation and Treatment Essentials, and co-author of The New Atkins for a New You, and Cholesterol Clarity.

  • Like dr atkins, this diet guru also appears a bit chubby… Why is this high fat diet supposed to be healthier than a high fruit diet (which he tries to discourage)?

  • Previous comments have pointed out the doctor is not fashionably slim  I myself was 49 years old  224 lbs and 5'3" but after three months on the diet I am 198 lbs 5'3"  I also look short and "puffy" but not nearly as "puffy" as I did three months ago, and my hair grew longer and my menopausal acne went away  Everybody ages, and the diet does result in weight loss  I guess someone will say my input is not good because diet advice given to middle aged overweight women is best taken from a beauty contestant

  • The diet doctor is fat. Not a good sign. Let's see the bloodwork of his patients vs vegans. I want to see this low cholesterol he says his clients have. I call BS on that.

  • I heard from many people that it will be hard to get enough fats in my diet on keto.  I ate a stick of melted butter with lemon over broccoli.  I then looked up the calories in a stick of butter as well as carbs in all that broccoli and lemon.  I don't know how people can eat the amount of fat I could easily eat with the calories from meat and veggies and loose weight.  Many people say the fat can't hurt you, that you don't have to count it.  I don't know how this can be true.  I think it would be easy for me to over or under eat fat.

  • I think that low carb gurus don't show all the data. Go see Michael Greger at and you will find something quite different and everything he says is based on studies. I have watched so many information on the web about health and I have not found one study that proves that meat is good for you. Every study on meat shows that it has bad effects on people.

  • Humans to be healthy need tons of plant foods. Animal foods aint no good for us (cancer wise), and for the earth. Almonds, meat and fish exploitation as it is done today ruin the earth and are terribly wastefull. We feed cows sooo much grains.

  • In his books, Kevin Galalae thoroughly exposes the reason why noncommunicable diseases have so dramatically increased in recent decades. Neither dietary changes nor medicine can address the fundamental problem. This is by design.

  • This is a lot simpler than it sounds. There is no reason whatsoever
    to pay for a book or a diet plan. Simply cut the carbs down to almost
    zero, one piece of toast in the morning for example. Regular and
    inexpensive chicken in breadcrumbs with a nice salad with coleslaw,
    tomatoes etc. Eat pretty much as you want. Cheap yoghorts, cheese on
    thins for a snack, as much coffee as you want. Like the lady says, don't
    be scared of fat, olive oil or even full cream. It wont hurt you. Its
    the root vegatables and the bread that make you fat and you can
    live without them. Feeling really hungry? Have an orange or tangerine
    with drinking chocolate at night, No one wants to go to bed starving. I
    have no liking for salads myself but with a whole beef burger (no bun)
    it ain't so bad. I was very overweight and type 2 diabetic, horribly
    diabetic and now I've lost 40 pounds and not diabetic any longer, no
    Metformin and no Insulin, I'm cured and it was all so simple. I wish I
    could say I got this advise from my own doctor or practice nurse but in
    truth I just worked it out for myself. I keep testing for blood sugar
    and its never over 5. PS My old clothes are now useless. My shirts look
    like tents! Don't be sceptical Doctor, ask someone who's actually been there and done it.

  • After I reached goal I could not raise my carbs more than 30 g. or I will/ would gain. To me it seemed easier to stay losing weight . Hate the up & down trying to stay at a weight I want 🙁 Xcelent video .
